NOTICE – SECTION 38 OF THE ROAD TRAFFIC ACT 1994

Safe Routes to School Project at

Brackloon National School, Westport, Co. Mayo

Pursuant to the provisions of Section 38 of the Roads Traffic Act 1994, Mayo County Council hereby gives notice of its intention to implement traffic calming measures at the following locations: -

  • L1822 Brackloon Road
  • Tawnynameeltoge Road

The proposed traffic calming measures include pedestrian crossings, junction tightening, signage and road markings with all associated works.

Scheme Objectives

The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Programme aims to make walking, cycling, and scooting to school safer and more accessible, helping to reduce car dependency, improve road safety, and support healthier, more active lifestyles.

Brackloon National School (Brackloon NS) is situated on the L1822 local road in Tawnynameeltoge, Brackloon, Co. Mayo, approximately 8km southwest of Westport Town, 3km south off the Westport Greenway, and 550m west of the N59.

The school is located on a rural road with a 60km/h speed limit and currently lacks footpath or dedicated cycling infrastructure along its frontage or in the immediate vicinity.

As part of the SRTS Scheme, works at the front of the school will focus on reducing vehicle speeds, enhancing the visibility of the school, and improving safety and access for cyclists, pedestrian and other venerable users. The scheme also proposes to deliver improved cycling facilities and safer pedestrian connections to support active travel to and from the school.
