Variation No.1 of the Mayo County Development Plan 2022-2028 was made at a full council meeting on the 8th December 2025. Further to section 13(11) of the Planning and Development Act 2000, as amended, the variariation takes effect from the day that it is made.

NOTICE OF PROPOSED VARIATION NO. 1 OF THE MAYO COUNTY DEVELOPMENT PLAN 2022 – 2028
Notice is hereby given pursuant to Section 13 of the Planning and Development Act 2000 (as amended) that Mayo County Council has prepared a proposed draft Variation No. 1 to the Mayo County Development Plan 2022 – 2028.
The reason for the proposed draft Variation No. 1 is to align with ‘The National Planning Framework’s First Revision 2025’ and the ‘Section 28 Guidelines on NPF Implementation – Housing Growth Requirements’ , and will include a new objective to guide appropriate development as envisaged in the development plan, and will contain the following elements:
Part A: Incorporate the Land use Zoning Maps for the following towns into the Mayo County Development Plan 2022 -2028.
Castlebar Town & Environs Local Area Plan 2023 -2029.
Ballina Local Area Plan 2024-2030.
Westport Local Area Plan 2024-2030.
Part B: Replace existing Table 2.4 – Core Strategy Table with a revised Core Strategy.
Part C: To release Strategic Residential Reserve Tier 1 Lands (195 Hectares).
The proposed Variation documents, and the accompanying Strategic Environmental Assessment, Appropriate Assessment Screening documents and Strategic Flood Risk Assessment are available to view as follows
(ii) At the following Council offices during normal office hours between 9am-5pm Monday to Friday:

Written submissions or observations in respect of the proposed Variation 1 may be made to the Planning Authority in the following ways:

• Via the Council’s online consultation portal at consult.mayo.ie

The period for submissions is from Tuesday 16th September 2025 to Tuesday 14th October 2025 (Inclusive).
All submissions will be published on the Council’s consultation portal following GDPR compliant redaction. Submissions will also form part of the statutory Chief Executive’s Report presented to the full Council.
Please ensure that your submission does not contain vexatious, libelous, or confidential information, including third-party personal data without consent. Mayo County Council reserves the right to redact any submission, in whole or in part, as necessary.
All personal data provided will be treated as confidential in accordance with data protection legislation.
The Chief Executive shall prepare a report on any submissions or observations received during the public consultation period, and this report shall be furnished to the Office of the Planning Regulator, the Elected Members and the Minister no later than 4 weeks after the public consultation process is completed.
