Traffic Calming Scheme at Foxford, Co. Mayo

*Extension to Public Consultation Period *

Pursuant to the provisions of Section 38 of the Road Traffic Act 1994 (as amended), Mayo County Council hereby gives notice of its intention to implement traffic calming measures at the following location(s):

  • N58 Main Street / N26 Chapel Road / L-5361 Lower Main Street Road Junction, Foxford, Co. Mayo

The proposed measures include upgrade and refurbishment works to the existing pedestrian crossing, footpath & kerbline alterations for junction tightening to all vehicular movements, additional signage, road markings, and all associated works.

A key element of the traffic calming proposal is road safety improvement by way of removal of the existing right turn movement from N58 Main Street onto N26 Chapel Road; where on approval and completion of the project, no right turn movement will be permitted.

Scheme Objectives

The primary objectives of the scheme are to:

  • To maintain the existing desired crossing point / location of existing pedestrian crossing
  • To enhance awareness and visibility of the pedestrian crossing
  • To reduce speed
  • To eliminate the existing right turn movement from Main Street onto the pedestrian crossing thereby eliminating a hazardous point of conflict between motorists and pedestrians.
  • To increase levels of compliance at the crossing and increase safety.

The proposed works include the following:

  • Install a 75mm (max) raised zebra pedestrian crossing as per TII Standard Construction Detail CC-SCD-05145 on the N26 Chapel Road;
  • Fit new IPL Modustar High Intensity Belisha Beacons;
  • Widen existing footpaths and reduce excess road space on N26 Bridge Street / Chapel Road to slow traffic speeds and increase vehicle / pedestrian intervisibility;
